As the weather gets cooler, you might be apprehensive about taking your dog on a long walk outside. When its particularly freezing, you also don’t want to take dogs that aren’t meant for the cold without a coat!
If you can’t get outside, your dogs still need exercise, so it’s important to find some activities indoors. Try these out!
Use the stairs
Run your dog up and down the stairs for easy exercise. Stairs help work different muscles for your dog. Stand at the top of the stairs and throw a toy down to your dog. When your dog grabs the toy, call his name and have him bring the toy to you.
Set up an obstacle course
Use things from around the house to create an obstacle course for your dog! Try an old hula hoop, couch cushions, toys, and more. This game will challenge your dog both mentally and physically.
Go on a field trip
Take your dog to the pet store so he can sniff around, check out the toys, and meet other dogs. You can also take him to an indoor doggy day care for some extra socialization.
Use the treadmill
A treadmill is a great way to get your dog a dose of healthy indoor exercise. First, allow your dog to get comfortable with the sight and sound of a running treadmill. Next, place your dog on the treadmill and give him a treat. Turn the treadmill on the lowest speed. Give him treats to keep him on the treadmill. Once he is comfortable with it, you can increase the speed.
