Would you be prepared to save and care for your pet in case of a natural disaster? In addition to getting your family ready for an earthquake, hurricane, or fire, your pets need to be ready as well. Follow this checklist to be prepared
:
1. Get a rescue alert sticker
Putting this sticker in your front window will alert rescue crews that you have a pet inside. Make sure you write the types and number of pets in your home.
2. Arrange a safe haven
Remember, if your home isn’t safe for you, it isn’t safe for your pets. Arrange a safe place to take your pets in case of emergency. Not all shelters accept pets, so you need a plan ahead of time. Consider these options:
Contact your veterinarian for a list of preferred boarding kennels and facilities.
Ask your local animal shelter if they provide emergency shelter or foster care for pets.
Identify hotels or motels outside of your immediate area that accept pets.
Ask friends and relatives outside your immediate area if they would be willing to take in your pet.
3. Prepare emergency supplies
Your disaster preparedness kit should include pet food, enough water for your pets, as well as any medications they need. Be sure to check every six months to make sure nothing has expired.
